Sad news today.
Found out this evening that Border's Bookstore is closing down for good. Not really surprised at this point.
Since 2002, the critique group I've been with has met at a Border's Bookstore for our meetings. We've laughed (sometimes at each other's writing submissions), we've unmercifully teased, drank tons of great java and chillers, and just plain had fun since that time.
That is until earlier this year.
We were all saddened to learn that our regular meeting place was one of several around the country being closed down, and rather quickly too.
Now this news that all Border's stores are being closed and liquidated. Ugh! But with the advent of competition from various sources, particularly eBooks, it seemed like only a matter of time after the first stores went down.
It's almost a double-edged sword. Our group has been busy working on the eBook challenge and it appears eBooks have been part of the reason Border's couldn't keep up any longer. Makes me wonder who might be next.
I only hope we're able to make something good happen out of the bad.

The Fellowship of Life
Tonight we started the first of a trilogy for the weekend.
It's been forever since we were both home with nowhere to go and no one coming to visit. This will also be the last weekend until the first weekend in June when we have nothing planned.
Wait - first weekend in June is now full. 'Tis my fortieth birthday bash. Tee-hee! Yes, it's full speed ahead for the huge party.
But that's going to have to wait for another post.
Since it's been so long since we've watched it, we pulled out the Lord of the Rings extended versions. We watched one tonight, will pull two for tomorrow, then the final for Sunday evening. Feels so good to have time to bum around together. It's also nice that we share several joys too.
I'll never forget when I saw the Fellowship of the Ring. For some reason, I'd never read these books. I even remember one of my older sisters reading the Hobbit in school, but I never picked them up until adulthood.
Now I own them. My son had to read them before he was allowed to watch the movies so he would have the opportunity to get the most out of the experience. Anytime they come out with a movie that is based upon a classic, I always have him read the book as incentive to see the movie.
Guess it won't be too many more years until that won't work anymore.
But the Lord of the Rings has so much depth. It is more than a movie or book series. It is more than an adventure or quest. These stories encompass the full bandwidth of all life has to offer - the good and the bad. Nothing is sugarcoated.
Life is hard. For some generations it is even more so. But even in the midst of the greatest of trials and battles, there is the blessing of a friend to hold us up, to encourage, to walk alongside.
For that, I love the Fellowship the most.

Book Bonanza
Went to Wal-mart this evening for the usual stock-up items. I love that store! Of course, I ended up staying much longer than intended when I saw the table of discounted books. Bought three. Ah, my weakness indeed.
Books - I love books! I love what a good book does to my insides. A good book makes me think, engages my mind, heart, and soul. It makes me cry, my heart pound, or creates this fire of anger deep in my being. All sorts of emotions can come up when I've got a good book in my hands. When the feelings rise, that's when I know the book is good on at least some level.
My new house has a nook for my library. In all my years, I've bought and collected tons of books and then given away tons more (or lent them out, never to return). I would love to have an enormous room filled with books like Professor Henry Higgins in "My Fair Lady". Sometimes I watch that movie just to see his library.
Right now I'm scoping out a new series of books for my son too. Summertime is coming up far too quickly, and I've yet to find a new series of books to interest him for summer reading. Any suggestions (appropriate, of course) would be most welcomed. I thought about perhaps getting him some Louis Lamour or such, but he's not into westerns or anything like that. He enjoys good fantasy fare and sci-fi (he loved Lord of the Rings). I need to get busy.
He'd have a complete cow if I made him read history all summer. Hey, a boy has to enjoy some things in life!
